Polystichum, 'Christmas fern'

Polystichum, 'Christmas fern'
Plant ID:
Polystichum, acrostichoides commonly known as a 'Christmas fern'.

Description:
A native species, Christmas ferns are celebrated as an evergreen herbaceous perennial. They feature waxy, lance-shaped, evergreen fronds that grow in clumps growing from 18" to 24" in height-spread.

Attributes:
Dating back to the mesozoic era, this time tested species of fern has very well-adapted defense to pests and disease, as well as a strong tolerance to drought. During the holiday season, they have a great appearance as cuttings alongside ornamental arrangements... a traditional favorite going back to the early settlers.

Where To Plant:
Thriving in partial shade to full shade, Christmas ferns prefer moist, humus-rich soils but are highly adaptable and will tolerate dry, rocky or shallow soils. Spreading by rhizome roots, they are also great for erosion control on rocky-ledgy slopes. They can be planted individually as accents to other shade loving plants, or in repetition-swaths as a ground cover. In general, Christmas ferns are most renowned for maintaining color and interest throughout the fall and winter.
