Nepeta, 'catmint'

Nepeta, 'catmint'
Plant ID:
Nepeta, racemosa 'Walker’s low' or 'catmint'.

Description:
Despite the common name, it's actually not low-growing for a perennial, reaching 36-48" tall and wide. This species is named after the English garden Walker’s Low where it was first documented.

Attributes:
Nepeta 'walker's low' is typically less attractive to cats than true catnip (Nepeta cataria), despite its name. Some cats may show interest, however most are not strongly attracted to it. 'Walker's low' or 'catmint', is an award-winning perennial well known for its aromatic, floral and minty foliage as well as long-lasting blooms which are widely enjoyed by pollinators and humans alike. Being a highly drought and disease resistant perennial makes this a generally low-maintenance species.

Where to Plant:
Full sun. Often used along walkway and patio borders where their fragrance and beauty is enjoyed. 'Catmint' can also be planted in rock gardens and pollinator gardens. Belonging to the mint family like bee-balm, the two do well together. Keeping in mind that "catmint' is a vigorous spreader, it's also quite easy to control with moderate thinning once or twice a year. Cutting back the flowers in early summer is also recommended to promote the growth of new flowers.
