Jap Painted Fern.jpg

Athyrium, 'Godzilla'

Plant ID:

Athyrium, 'niponicum 'Pictum' x 'filix-femina' commonly known as 'Godzilla' or 'crested Japanese painted ferns'.

Description:
Growing in clumps up to 3 feet tall and spreading up to 6 feet, this herbaceous perennial is a naturally occurring hybrid which inherits the lush, silvery-green fronds and defining purple midribs of Japanese painted ferns... Crossed with the larger, more upright growth and form of Lady Ferns.

Attributes:
Although ferns do not flower, their peaceful and calming foliage is often used for ornamental arrangements in addition to landscapes and gardens. Having unique foliage in a garden layout is a great way to add balance and interest. Thriving in moist, somewhat acidic soil, these do best in partial shade with filtered sun.

Where To Plant:
Excellent for woodland gardens, shade borders, mass plantings and as a ground cover. Used as both a focal point or filler plant. Often paired with hostas, heucheras, astilbes and other shade loving perennials.
